What should I pack for the painted island?
One of the questions we hear the most?
"What should I pack?"
The good news is that for the Painted Island Retreat, you don't need to overthink it.
October in Flores is often described as "eternal spring." That means you'll likely experience warm-ish days with highs in the 70s or low 80s and cooler mornings and evenings with temps in the 50s or 60s. October is on the tail-end of their rainy season, so while you may experience a rain shower or two, they are typically brief and in the late afternoon or evening . The best advice we can give is to pack light layers so you're comfortable no matter what the day brings.
Here's what we'd recommend:
Comfortable clothes for movement
Whether you're joining us for Pilates, stretching, trekking the jungle, or simply relaxing around the hotel, bring clothes you feel good moving in. Leggings, shorts, tanks, T-shirts, lightweight joggers, and athletic wear are all perfect. Make sure to pack a sweatshirt or jacket you can throw on for any morning or evening activities.
Swimwear
We have excursions that include the option of swimming, and our hotel has a beautiful pool overlooking the lagoon, as well as a spa pool. Bring at least one swimsuit, although you may want two if you plan to spend plenty of time in the water.
Shoes you'll actually wear
You'll want comfortable walking shoes for exploring the colorful streets of Flores, strolling along the lakefront, browsing local shops and cafés, and especially for our day at Tikal, where you'll be walking on uneven jungle trails and ancient stone paths.
A comfortable pair of sneakers or light outdoor shoes is ideal. Sandals or flip-flops are great for the hotel, pool, and boat excursions.
A small day bag
A small lightweight backpack, sling bag, or crossbody is one of those “extras” you'll be glad you packed. It's perfect for carrying a water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, phone, bug spray, wallet, and any little treasures you pick up along the way!
Dinner attire
Nothing on this retreat is formal.
Our group dinners are all about relaxing, enjoying incredible food, and spending time with people you care about. If dressing up makes you happy, bring the fun vacation outifts you’ve been dying to wear. If you'd rather wear shorts and a tank top, or your favorite comfortable outfit, that's absolutely perfect too. In short, pack whatever makes you feel comfortable and relaxed!
Exploring Flores
You'll have time to wander the colorful, charming island village of Flores, where colonial buildings, lakeside views, cafés, restaurants, and local shops invite you to slow down and explore.
Casual vacation clothes are perfectly appropriate here…though we have a feeling you’re going to want to take all the photos, so if you’re thinking about breaking out those cute vacay clothes, this would be the spot to sport them!
If you're adding Antigua
If you've decided to extend your adventure with a stay in Antigua, your layers will really come in handy. Antigua sits at a higher elevation than Flores, so mornings and evenings can feel slightly cooler.
You'll probably want to pack:
A light sweater or jacket
Comfortable walking shoes for the cobblestone streets
A pair of jeans, long skirt or lightweight pants
A few outfits for exploring the city and dining out
Antigua is traditionally more conservative than Flores. While there's no strict dress code, you'll feel most comfortable in clothing that's a little more modest, especially if you plan to visit the beautiful churches and historical sites.
Don't forget...
Passport (double-check that it doesn't expire within six months of your trip!)
Sunglasses
Hat
Sunscreen
Reusable water bottle
Bug spray
Phone charger
Portable battery pack (optional but great for excursions)
Any medications you may need
We'll have a retreat swag bag waiting for you when you arrive, and you'll more than likely find at least a few unique souvenirs while exploring Flores and Guatemala that you'll want to bring home. This is especially true for Antigua, if you’re visiting there as well. Antigua has beautiful textiles, leather goods, and beaded jewelry. Save some room in your suitcase! Or better yet, buy a beautiful leather bag to bring back all of your treasures in!
The biggest thing to remember is this:
Pack for comfort. This retreat is about movement, adventure, relaxation, connection, incredible scenery, and making unforgettable memories together. There isn't a "right" outfit, and no one will be judging what you're wearing.
Pack light, bring layers, wear comfortable shoes, and get ready for an amazing week. We can't wait to share Guatemala with you!
